The stupa was built around 18th century to subdue a harmful demon which have been living at the site where now choeten (stupa) stands. The stupa is modeled after the famous Boudhnath Stupa in Nepal.
A popular belief is that when the stupa was constructed, a pious dakini princess from Arunachal Pradesh entombed herself within to meditate on behalf of all beings.
